Sentence Making (Part III)

Sentence Making (Part III)

Just right before I left the class yesterday, I told the children that they shall try to make 4 sentences on the next day. They didn't seem to be afraid of it yet, they were quite thrilled with it. I believe that with the proper encouragement, they believe that they could do it and they were quite proud of it as well.

After the outdoor activity today, we quickly entered back to the class to start with the sentence making session. Besides the 3 sentences that they had made on the previous day about their name, age and a shape that they like, today, I get them to make a sentence about their gender - I am a boy or I am a girl.

Example,
I am Yen Hao.
I am four years old.
I am a boy.
I like circle.

Most of the children could make those 4 sentences with very little help. The children were happy. Hopefully by Friday, they could make 5 sentences and they could get their reward - lollipop. Yeah!

Sentences Making (Part II)

The children went on a field trip to the National Zoo yesterday, therefore, there was no blog update for 22nd June 2016.

However, the children seem to look quite exhausted on the next day after the field trip. Therefore, today, I allowed the children to have some extra time to run about outside. Some of them started to ask if they could draw with chalks on the floor. I gave them some and I even started to draw with them.

Out of my surprise to find out that they were drawing shapes such as circle, square and some can even drew a triangle. I demonstrated some to them and they were quite happy to know that they could draw by themselves.

After the drawing session, we all came back to the class and sat down in a circle. I told the children that they shall try by making one extra sentences per day. The children started off with one sentence on last Friday and two sentences on Monday - I am ______ (they needed to say out their name) & their age.

Today, the children needed to add on one sentence. I picked the sentence for them - I like ______ (shapes).

Each of them would say out their name, age and a shape that they like. Most of the children could say it without much guidance. This is a good start. We shall add on another sentence tomorrow.

Book Sharing - Who Am I?

I will not go into too detail about each zoo animals, yet, I shall just briefly introduce the name of the animals and some special features on their body.

Today, I brought in a book that introduces elephant. The book guided the children to look at the special features of an elephant with some simple sentences. The name of the book is "Who Am I?"

During circle time, I get the children to speak in simple sentence. Most of them could do so.

I wanted to see if the children to increase their sentences using by next week. Next week would be our final week for the English thematic class. We shall have a switch again for another 2 months. Hopefully, the children will grab the chance to make as many sentences as they could before the end of the class by next Friday.

Zoo Animals

The children will be going on a field trip to the National Zoo next Tuesday. Therefore, I wanted to introduce some animals that they probably will see in the zoo such as lion, elephant, zebra, giraffe etc.

I played them a video about lions today. Some of them still got it confused with tiger. Anyhow, hopefully, they will see the difference between these 2 animals when they see it for themselves in the zoo later.

Then, I brought in a book to share with the children - A Busy, Busy Day in Tinga, Tinga Tales

Through the story, the children got to see lots of other animals that appeared in the story.

The Green Peas' class (name for the class in the morning session) is going to incubate chicken eggs into chicks. The teacher also brought a hen and a roaster for the children to observe. However, the hen and the roaster has been transferred to another place today.

The children were excited to see the roaster and could tell me that it is a roaster. I believe that they recalled it from the song that we sang earlier.

Therefore, today, after the children had their routine outdoor session, we all sat down to listen to a story telling. I brought a book in today - Cock~a~Doodle Quack! Quack! by Ivor Baddiel and Sophie Jubb, Illustrated by Ailie Busby. The children enjoyed the story.

Note: It is a public holiday tomorrow. Therefore, there will be no blog update for 22nd June 2016.

Sky Observation

Usually, I will bring the children out to go for a run before I have my class with them. Therefore, today, after getting the children to run around for almost 20 minutes, we all sat down in a circle.

We sang some songs about circle and shapes. We also sang the song about the colour of the sky. It was a pretty sunny day today where we could see the blue sky with all those white clouds around it. I also get the children to point out the green grass, the see where was the sun at that time.

We also observe the colour of the gate, the colour of cars that passed by, or even the colours of the school's wall.

Due to the hot weather, we moved back into the class to take a good rest before the children proceed to another lesson for the day.

I managed to get all the children that present today to complete their printing.

Book Sharing - If I could Paint the World

After the children sang the song about "What is the Colour of the Sky?", it mentioned about things outside of the classroom. Therefore, when I took the children to play at the playground outside, I get the children to observe the grass, the sky outside. Some of them even spotted the moon in the bright sunny day. They were happy to know that.

Then, we moved back into the classroom after running, playing and observing for almost half and hour outside. We sat down in the circle and sang some songs before I read them a story.

I shared the book by Sarah Massini - If I could Paint the World.

Hokey Pokey Song

I wanted to introduce this song quite some time ago yet I find it not suitable at that moment. However, after teaching the children for some time now, I guess, it's time for me to introduce this song to them.

We watched the song video together to see what the movement that they needed to learn. After that, I guided them through each steps and movement before I played the video again.

Then, we all stood up in a circle to follow the steps and movement by listening to it. Most of the children could follow my actions and we needed a few more rounds so that they could familiarized themselves with the song. The children seem to enjoy it pretty much.

We shall do it again tomorrow.

After that, we sang some songs that we had learned such as "One Little Finger", "Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes" etc.

We also revised the name of shapes by flashing the cards we made. I get the children to search for the certain shapes in the class when I mentioned it. Some of them were quite good in searching for things in the class.

We shall move on to colours and other things around us next week.

Activity - Shapes Recognizing Games

Today, I placed the 4 reading card of shapes that I showed the children on the back of 4 chairs. Then, I have already pre-cut some shapes in colour in hand.

The recognizing game was done this way:

1st round: The children came out to pick a shape from the envelope without looking at it. They have to say out the name of the shapes and pasted it onto the relevant reading card.

2nd round: The children queued up and I picked the shapes for them. They need to tell me the shape that I was holding in hand before pasting them onto the reading card again.

3rd round: The children queued up again and this time, they have to tell me which shape they want. Then, I shall look up for the shape for them to be pasted onto the reading card.

Hopefully with such motivation, the children could remember the shapes that they were not familiar with.

Here were some pictures taken during the activity:

After the children were done with the pasting of the reading card, it looked so beautiful and colourful.

Recognising Shapes

After singing the song of shape yesterday, I realized the children were more familiar with circle and got confused with other shapes. Therefore, I couldn't carry out the initial lesson plan for today.

Yet, I have prepared the big reading card for them to read.

We just read through those reading cards and sang the shape song again. We also looked around the class to find those shapes. Due to unfamiliar with the name of shapes, the children were not able to tell me accurately.

We shall carry out the shapes recognising activity tomorrow.
