To compare big and small

We started off the lesson today by practising the "Make a Circle" song with actions. Today, the children managed to do it better compare to last Friday.

After that, we adapted some terms used in the song - big and small. I picked 2 different sizes of water tumbler for the children to see and to compare. They could tell me which one is big and which one is small.

Then, I get them to walk around the classroom to choose anything that they could find to make comparison with their friends.

Here were some pictures taken during the activity:

Most of them could tell out which item is consider small and which is consider big.

Make a circle

Today, I wanted to introduce a new song for the children. The song is to let the children hold hands with their friends to make a circle either big or small. The children listen and watched the video first before they stood up to follow it. It was quite a challenge when some of the children didn't really get the correct action of doing it and got all the children in a mess. I have to explain it with demonstration again so that they could do it in a proper way.

Video: Make A Circle | Preschool Song | Super Simple Songs

We had that done for a few rounds before we all sat down in a circle. We sang some songs and distributed out the picture of the "real me" for the children to bring home. Parents could help them to paste their picture of "real me" at home and get them to recognise their name that I have written on the paper.

We shall move on to About Myself - Things around me next week.

Worksheet - Part of My Body

After introducing the song - One little finger, the children could tell me precisely when I mentioned head, arm and leg. Therefore, I prepared the three words for the children to paste it onto the worksheet that they were working on a few days ago.

This time, the children had more experience with such activity, most of them could do it without much guidance. Wow, they have improved quite a lot. I'm happy for them.

We shall move on to "About Myself - Things around me" next week. Parents could help to get your child to observe things around them and name those things such as chairs, table, kitchen, television, bed etc.

I am a boy / I am a girl.

I have got the children to practice the sentences by saying, "I am a boy." or "I am a girl." earlier. Today, I got them to sit in a circle and took turns to practice the sentences. When the children were sitting in a circle, they could how their friends express this sentence and learned as well. Most of the children could say it out loud while some were pretty soft.

We ended our circle activity with the song - "One little finger, one little finger, tap, tap, tap"

Then, I gave back some of the picture of the "real me" to them to continue to colour.

We called it a day when the children had completed their colouring.

Draw the Real Me

Today, we started off by song singing and some reading about me and things that a little boy and girl could do such as walking, standing, running, jumping etc.

Then, I introduced the word - boy and girl. I gave some instruction for boys to do and some instructions for girls to do to see if they understand the difference of it.

I also brought in some big blank paper for the children to draw a girl and a boy shape out. Some of the children asked if they could let them have one each. I guess I can. We can only do it on the next day.

Revision

Today, I wanted to do some simple activity with the kids. I postponed the "parts of the body" assignment till next Monday.

I brought in back the ball. I asked the children to tell me those actions that I could do with the ball. Somehow, they only managed to tell me throw and catch. Therefore, I taught them another action for playing with the ball today - pat and bounce the ball. They have actually heard of the sentence - "Ben is bouncing the ball." in their phonics book.

So today, I let them try to bounce and say at the same time. We did quite some rounds on this. Then we round up the activity with throw and catch as well.

The children had a very energetic activity today! Phew, what a fun day to have.

Part of the Body (part II)

There were a few of them did the assignment in correctly. Therefore, we used a few minute today to let them complete the assignment.

Besides that, we have a new boy who just joined our afternoon class today. He is Seen Hong. I also prepared the "part of the body" worksheet for him to do.

In order for Seen Hong to get familiar with the environment in the class, I get the children to practice to throw and catch the ball. Besides using their hands to catch, I wanted them to use the sentence as well such as, "I throw the ball." or "I catch the ball."

Seen Hong and the rest of the friends could do it quite well.

Parts of the Body

After a few lessons, I believe that the children were more familiar with me. As the first few lessons, they just couldn't say their own name. I tried with them again today. Wow, most of them could use the phrase , "My name is......" and say out their name.

Then, we sang the song that we learned about the parts of the body - One little finger, one little finger, tap, tap, tap.

By using the lyrics in the song, I taught the children to use the sentence structure - I have....

The children were quite shy and needed some time to get used to the language and also the sentence structures that I introduced here. Hopefully with more practice in the future, they could do it naturally.

I have prepared a worksheet for the children to paste the parts of the body onto an orange paper. They did the parts of the face, some of them could understand this assignment while some of them needed guidance.

Activity - Label the Parts of the Face

Today, I have prepared some words for the children to label the parts of the face. The children were divided into 3 groups with about 3-4 kids in a group. I have four words in hand - eye, mouth, nose and ear.

We started off the activity by introducing one word each time. Then, the children pointed out the blank to paste the word. Most of the children could find the spot while some needed some hints.

We managed to complete the activity today.

Here is a sample of the worksheet done by the children:

Activity: Part of My Face (part III)

Today, I believe most of the children understand on how to paste the parts onto the face that I provided. I wanted to see if the children could complete the worksheet without much guidance. I divided them into 2 big groups.

Some of the children had completed their parts on last Friday, therefore, they helped me to guide those who needed help. Surprisingly, most of them could complete it without much help.

We shall label the parts of the face tomorrow and then we could move on to another part of the body.

Activity: Part of My Face (part II)

Today, the children will need to paste the parts onto the face that I have provided for them. As I'm afraid that some might be able to handle it themselves, therefore, I chose to guide them one by one.

I have pre-cut all the parts of the face and put them into an envelope for each of them. Today, I prepared some colour papers for them to paste their face onto it. Fortunately, those children that I called upon today managed without much of my guidance. We only managed to complete a few today, the rest of them shall continue with the activity on next Monday.

Activity: Part of the Face (Part I)

I have printed out the part of the face for the children to paste it as an activity. However, today, after some explanation and revision, I only managed to demonstrate on how to paste the parts of the face onto the empty face that I have printed.

The children shall carry out such activity tomorrow.

Here's a sample of the face:

After I have done, the children claimed that it looked like a monkey instead. We had a good laugh!!

One Little Finger, Tap, tap, tap

Today, we did a revision on the parts of the face. Then, I added some sentences for the children to practice.

I get the children to say "I have...."

Example, I have two eyes. (I pointed to the eyes.)
I have one nose. (I pointed to the nose.)
I have one mouth. (I pointed to the mouth.)
I have two ears. (I pointed to the ears.)

Parents could play with your child by using the above sentences. You could also replace it with other items around them.

Then, I taught them a new song today - One Little Finger | Super Simple Songs
After listening to it, I tried to get the children to do it with action. They were pretty shy, only a few of them could follow. Anyhow, we shall be singing this song for the next few lessons.

Teacher: Ms Yeong

What is missing?

Today, I started off by reading them a book that introduces the parts on the face such as hair, eye, nose, ears and mouth.

Then, I drew 3 faces on the board with some missing parts for the children to tell and fill in.

We looked at the first face, I asked the children what is missing on the face.
Rui Ying: eye
Yue Ying: ear

I get some volunteer to draw the missing parts on the face. I have Ean to draw the eye and Yue Ying to draw the ears.

Then, we moved on to the 2nd face. The children needed to point out the missing parts again.
Ean & Rui Ying: nose
Rui Ying: ear

So this time, I get Rui Ying to draw the ears and Yu Harn to draw the nose.

Now, we were looking at the last face. The children could tell me easily this time.
Sandra: mouth
Rui Ying: ears

I get Sandra to draw a mouth while Jing Yee to add in the ears.

Action Words

Action Words

I have played this song for the children during our phonetic class. They were quite familiar with it. Only that, they might not be able to sing it out without the video. Therefore, today, we went through all the actions such as walking, hop, running, stop, tip-toe, jump, swimming and sleep that mentioned in the song.

After a few making sure that everyone understand the action for each word, we stood in a big circle and slowly move towards a direction and singing the song with actions. This is to let the children get to see the action done by others in case they forgot. We had this for 2 rounds before everyone was exhausted and sat down for a rest.

Tomorrow we shall concentrate on the parts on the face.

Mother's Day Card Making (part III)

Today, we concentrated on getting all the decorations and message to be pasted onto the card. I guided the children to work in small group while others were reading at the other corner. Besides that, I have also cut the heart shape that the children were working on so that they could paste it onto the card as well. On the other hand, I also prepared some cute sticker (which was not too sticky anymore, the children needed to use glue to stick them onto the card). I told the children that their mother deserves a star from them too.

Here were some cards that the children done:

Tear & Paste

Tear & Paste

We did some revision with "I throw" & "I catch". Then, today, I wanted the children to try to learn another action that they could do with their hands - tear and paste. Mother's Day is just around the corner, I used this opportunity to get the children to do some art work for their mother.

I prepared a "heart" shape and some colour paper that I have cut in stripes. The children were divided into 3 groups and were given a basket with some colourful paper in it. They needed to tear the stripes paper into smaller pieces so that they could paste it onto the "heart"shape.

The children only managed to complete the "heart" shape today. We shall continue with the other parts of the Mother's Day card tomorrow.
